The first time the Soto 40 fleet competed as a separate class in Copa del Rey MAPFRE was in 2012 and they repeated in 2013. This year, six teams have registered to compete in Singular Kitchen Soto 40 class.
“To be a separate class in Copa del Rey MAPFRE is an important milestone for the class,” says Pablo Ferrer, secretary of the European fleet. “It involves international exposure and more media impact, and it shows that the owners are still eager to compete in major events. We have gathered a good group of teams from Spain, Portugal, UK and France, and also one from Chile, which ensures a very competitive edition.”
Defence and tribute
Amongst the teams that will defend their colours in 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE there will also be the last champion of the class in Palma, Luis Martín Cabiedes’ “Noticia IV” skippered by José María Torcida, who defends the crown achieved in Copa del Rey MAPFRE 2013 onboard “Vamos Spain”.
The emotional touch will arrive in the hands of Portuguese “Bigamist” which says goodbye to the competition after a long and fruitful career. “This year we lost Pedro Mendonça, an important cornerstone for the class in Europe. His team is competing for the last time in memory of its owner.” And it will do so with Ana Mendonça in charge of the team and skippered once again by Afonso Domingos.
The return of the Soto 40 fleet is very good news for the show of Copa del Rey MAPFRE. Ferrer defines it as “a very competitive boat, fast surfing when the wind picks up and great fun for the crews.” The proposal of the Soto 40 to become one of the most hard fought categories in the race course of Palma include exciting starts, authentic scrums in each mark rounding and photo finish arrivals. “The class has done a good job keeping the equality of the fleet, and it is quite common to see older boats at the front of the fleet, as it happened last year in the world championship in Valencia, where a boat from 2008 led the race for several days.”
The program for Singular Kitchen Soto 40 class in 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE will begin on Monday, August 3rd, with the practice race, which won’t score for the final result. The competition will start on Tuesday, August 4th until Saturday 8th, with up to ten windward/leeward races scheduled.
34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organized by Real Club Náutico de Palma and will be held from August 1st to the 8th, 2015.
