The J80 fleet debuted as class in Copa del Rey MAPFRE in 2011. Since then, the small one design has been a regular at the pontoons of the Real Club Náutico de Palma during each edition. This year they will be again the smaller boats of the regatta (8 meters).
The list of pre-registered entries for 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE in Herbalife J80 class includes 19 boats from four nationalities. The Palma regatta will be the first international race for this class after the 2015 World Championship, which took place from July 4th to the 10th in Kiel, Germany.
Out of all the participants Marc de Antonio’s “Bribon Movistar” won’t miss this event as the runner-up in the World Championship 2015. After proving their excellent performance in the cold waters of Kiel, where he led the provisional overall during the first four days of racing, the team from the RCNB/RCNS will face the event in Palma de Mallorca with the intention to improve the fourth position achieved in 2014, although they are aware that their rivals will not make it easy. “The conditions in the Bay of Palma will be totally different from the worlds, and the level is very high,” says Marc de Antonio.
However, among Herbalife J80 fleet there will be a few skippers who already know what it means to win Copa del Rey MAPFRE. Skippers like Carlos Martínez (winner in 2012, second in 2014 and third in 2013) onboard “Akewuele” or Jose Maria Van der Ploeg (winner in 2011, second in 2012 and third in 2013) onboard “Nautica Watches”. Javier Aguado, skipper of “Oxital/Peugeot” was second in 2011. Rayco Tabares, current J80 world champion, will compete in 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE, but repeating the role of tactician onboard “Rats on Fire” in the category BMW ORC 1.
The competition program for Herbalife J80 class in 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE has a maximum of 12 windward/leeward races scheduled between Monday, August 3rd, and Saturday 8th.
34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organized by the Real Club Nautico de Palma and will be held from August 1st to the 8th, 2015.
