Half the fleet of the 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE will compete in the ORC division. 42 teams have filled in their registration in the class BMW ORC 1 and 32 in BMW ORC 2. That is a total of 14 different nationalities and a diverse range of boats with lengths between 9.5 and 16.5 meters.”Rats on Fire” in BMW ORC 1 and “Movistar” in BMW ORC 2, the dominant teams in the last editions will be present once again.
“Rats on Fire”, the reference in BMW ORC 1
Rafael Carbonell’s Swan 45 ‘Rats on Fire”, skippered by Noluco Doreste, will seek his third consecutive victory in BMW ORC 1 class, after winning the title in this category in 2013 and 2014. The team from the Club Nautic d’Arenys de Mar also won the Copa del Rey MAPFRE in 2010 and 2011 in the RI category.
“We are planning to defend the title with enthusiasm and excitement, but we are aware it gets to the point where repeating the title is not possible”, says Carbonell. “What I can say is that we will definitely try”. To do so, the Swan 45 will have onboard the same crew that finished third in the Barcelona ORC World Championship in the category B, which took place last week, “we were very happy with this result because of the quality of our rivals”.
In Palma they will face again a powerful army, including German “Earlybird” and “Elena Nova”, the teams that also finished in a podium position in 2014. “This year I would also add to those two teams Luis Doreste. I think he will be a very tough opponent. In general there is a very strong participation, as always; that’s one of the things we like the most about this race”.
With four titles in their display cabinet, Carbonell can’t find any objective reasons to explain his magnificent performance in the Copa del Rey MAPFRE. “I always say that we don’t have the key: A well prepared boat, a group of friends as crew, do it with enthusiasm, calm, and not much else. It is true that with time you sail your boat better, but everybody knows the secrets of the bay”.
“Movistar”, the record team in BMW ORC 2
Jose Enrique Terol’s Synergy 40 “Movistar”, skippered by Pedro Campos, won the titles of BMW ORC 2 in 2013 and 2014. Last year it was his seventh victory and established an absolute record in the Palma regatta.
“Movistar” will start as the favourite, but this does not seem to bother the team which will arrive to Palma with an extra confidence after winning the ORC B 2015 world championship in Barcelona. “More than pressure is extra motivation,” explains Pedro Campos.
“I think the performance keys of our team are several: First, we prepare very well the boats; historically we’ve had very competitive boats and we are always looking for ways to improve them. Many of the ideas that have been successful in ORC came out of our own team. The second factor is the crew. We have spent many years together, we know each other very well, there is trust, and that makes everything work fluidly, especially when we are over the line or we have a bad start, because instead of getting nervous we close ranks and concentrate on recovering”.
“Movistar” won’t have it easy either to defend the title. If in 2014 they had to compete against 21 rivals, this year they will compete against 31. Amongst them there will be “Fyord” (third in the worlds in ORC C), Tanit IV Medilevel” (sixth) or “Vell Mari” (third in Palma in 2014 as well as “Airlan Aermec”). “We always say that the Copa del Rey is like an unofficial world championship, because the best are there”, says Campos. “The distribution of the classes will be different, but the level is very high, very similar to the worlds. In recent years the Spanish fleet has achieved remarkable results, including several victories. As a country we are at the top”.
The competition schedule for the BMW ORC classes include a maximum of 11 scoring races to be sailed between Monday, August 3rd and Saturday 8th.
The 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organized by the Real Club Nautico de Palma and will be held from August 1st to the 8th 2015.
